I’m working on a english discussion question and need an explanation to help me understand better.
This assignment include one Initial post and two responses posts.
Different companies use communication technology in very different ways. While many companies continue to rely heavily on email for communication, in other companies, instant messaging programs are the norm. In some companies texting during a meeting would be seen as high offensive behavior; however, in recent years, texting is the primary way that employees communicate with each other.
For this discussion prompt, consider one or more of the following questions: Is it possible for companies to be too dependent on communication technology? How might texting or instant messaging aid in the KISS mantra (i.e. concise writing)? Or conversely, how might texting or instant messaging work against empathetic writing (an equally important goal of business writing)? How might we weigh the costs and benefits of each type of communication?
Please respond to the two following posts:
Student Juan’s post: “I think it is definitely possible for a business to become too reliant on communication technology. When I took MGT 380 we read a book that had examples of managers that would spend their entire days at work answering emails. While originally this might have seemed like a good idea because it allows managers to communicate with people inside and outside the organization quickly, most managers ended up becoming far too reliant on it and it inhibited their ability to disseminate information. On the contrary, I believe texting and instant messaging can be useful for concise writing. Speaking from a first hand experience, comparing working at Anthony’s vs. working at McDonald’s, because of the smaller size of company, Anthony’s only allowed us to ask for shifts off or trade shifts on the paper schedule at work which made it very difficult unless you had coworkers phone numbers, to get shifts covered. McDonald’s had a dedicated app for switching shifts and you could instant message any coworkers to ask if they could cover. I frequently would work shifts at Anthony’s I wanted covered, whereas at McDonald’s I never had a problem getting a shift covered. Overall, I think these forms of communication can be useful but only if the company helps create useful tools and doesn’t let the system become too complex to manage.”
Student Kaycee’s post: “In my opinion I don’t think that it is possible for companies to be too dependent on communication through technology because it is so much more quicker to be able to go back and forth between companies and they are able to figure out plans or whatever they are communicating way faster. Texting and instant messaging are usually more casual but I do think that there are ways to be able to still use business writing when it comes to more important things. If there is something more important it should be sent in a email or in a more professional way other than the other two.”
