Reading Response 6 – Herodian’s History of Rome since the Death of Marcus Aurelius:

All great things must come to an end, and the Roman empire is no different. While the personality quirks of the Julio-Claudian emperors didn’t have much of an effect on the empire as a whole, the systemic and structural issues of the third century eventually led to the decline and fall of the Roman empire. For this reading response, I’m going to have you read about the year of the six emperors, 238 CE. As you read, think about what Herodian includes in his text that suggests problems in the Roman empire. For your response, play the role of historian and describe what you think is causing the decline and fall of Rome based on the content of Herodian’s text. What do you think he focuses on? What factors might he be missing? Make sure to support your argument with at least three citations from the ancient source.

• Read. Read the book 8 of Herodian’s History of the Roman Empire since the Death of Marcus Aurelius while keeping in mind the assignment overview for this response.
