Watch the following 15-minute video: Soul Food: Santeria
This video is full of information about the Santeria religion as practised by members of the Los Angeles community. Host Kiran Deol interviews Charles, a santero and owner of Botanica, a Santería store. Charles, a native Spanish speaker, explains the shrine dedicated to the orishas and ancestors in the “inner sanctum” of his store. The next day, he invites Kiran to his home to take part in a ritual to honour St. Lazarus, or the orisha Babalu-Ayé (pronounced baba-LOO-a-yay).
For your post, summarize what you learned from this video. Include answers to the following questions:
1. Where (which group in which country) did the Santería traditions originate? What does the word “Ordi-sha” (which becomes “orisha”) mean? In the shrines, why do you see images/statues of both Catholic saints and Santerían orishas?
2. What is the main role of St. Lazarus or Babalu-Ayé? Several of the foods offered to him at the shrine are chosen for their symbolism. Name three of these foods and their significance as explained in the video. What happens to the food that is offered?
3. According to Santerían belief, what does the orisha Babalu-Ayé expect from his followers? What do the followers ask of him?
4. Why is Santería in California practised largely in secret? Is this the case in Cuba?
