Assignment: You are required to prepare and deliver (according to the speech schedule) a 6-8 minute informative speech on a specific cultural practice from a culture different than your own. The specific cultural practice can be from any social institution (e.g., marriage, sports, education, business, family, religion etc…). The ultimate goal of the informative speech is to give the audience information that is of interest and value. Students are expected to apply concepts discussed in class and described in the textbook in both the preparation and delivery of the informative speeches. All speeches are required to have a minimum of four outside sources, which must be cited in the speech. Speeches are worth up to 60 points and will be graded on the following criteria: organization, language, material, delivery, analysis, and voice.

In addition, prior to 10:00 AM the day before your speech is scheduled, each student must prepare and submit to folio a “speaking brief” using the “Informative Speech Speaking Brief Template” posted in on folio. The speaking brief must include the following: 1) your name, 2) the title of the speech, 2) the specific purpose of the speech (phrased according to the guidelines discussed in class and described in the textbook), 3) the entire introduction, 4) the central idea (phrased according to the guidelines discussed in class and described in the textbook), 5) the main points, 6) the connectives, 7) the entire conclusion, and 7) the works cited page, including a link to the outside sources cited in the speech. Failure to prepare and turn in a speaking brief that accomplishes ALL the above will result in a deduction of six points (one letter grade) from the final score. Failure to turn in a speaking brief prior to your speech will result in a deduction of 12 points.
