Using The Theory Of Unpleasant Symptoms As A Guide, What Would You Look For In An Assessment Tool For Patient Symptoms?

Using The Theory Of Unpleasant Symptoms As A Guide, What Would You Look For In An Assessment Tool For Patient Symptoms?

My task is only to give a positive opinion of these 2 discussions from my classmates. In total, I need 2 replies. The 2 discussions are these:

Discussion # 1 :

Theories are coined to provide a framework for explaining certain dynamics, guiding through a  phenomenon, or giving the reasoning behind a certain situation. In nursing, theories guide clinical practice. The unpleasant syndrome theory is one such and was developed and revised in 1995 and 1997, respectively. In nursing, it guides nurses to realize the various categorization of syndromes and guide them in using various interventions. Gomes et al. (2019) argue that the theory brings in three major elements, which are the symptoms observed in the patient and so experienced, factors that influence such symptoms, and the effects of the experience of the symptoms by the patient.

One key issue that would be given consideration is the symptoms being experienced by the patent and the implication that come from the said symptoms. They have been described, per this theory, to be a key barometer of the health status of the individual in question. They are to be examined in the dynamics of time, quality, suffering, and intensity.Lenz(2018) has shown that the theory defines the symptoms in a subjective model just as they have been experienced by the patient themselves. Using this theory can also entail looking at the existence of multiple symptoms that may occur all at once, possibly refective a common cause as well as cumulative consequences can be the same.Guided by the given theory, I will look at the nearby physical environment that may be associated with the factors that the patient is experiencing.

Discussion # 2 :

The theory of Unpleasant symptoms arose from the most specific to the most general and concrete observation in clinical practice. Its objective is to integrate knowledge about symptoms by providing standard definitions to facilitate their evaluation and management. In this way, other non-pharmacological treatments would be created for their management, thus reducing the negative repercussions they represent for the patient’s recovery. Likewise, the new theory created served as a tool for collaborative research and its application in practice. (Lenz, 2018)

Various models have been proposed that may influence the theory of Unpleasant symptoms. One of the best-known is the one proposed by Walker and Avant, which conceptualizes the interaction of factors that can modify the said theory. These factors not only influence the evolution of the patient but also change each other. They were described below:

1) the existence of symptoms or groups of symptoms can lead to the appearance of others. 2) The psychological and physiological factors are related to each other and the appearance of other symptoms. 3) the greater the number of associated factors, the greater the influence of the Unpleasant symptoms, and 4) The dimensions of the symptoms influence each other. It is essential to clarify that the use of this theory in clinical nursing practice plays a crucial role. It helps channel and detect other treatment methods that favor the patient’s recovery. Its implementation is also an essential basis for research, allowing for organizing and strategizing the method used in each investigative process. Applying empirical instruments in research, such as patient interviews, questionnaires, and case studies, will allow future nurses to continue their quest into the theory of Unpleasant symptoms. (Smith, 2018)
