Hi Joel and Class,

I enjoyed reading your response, and you made some excellent points regarding the important aspects of facility planning and design related to engaging the community. 

The health industry is shifting towards community health centers, population health, and nonprofit organizational structures. These changes bring additional necessities to involve the community. Once the project is complete, you and your classmates are correct; the organization must be very transparent with results and goals, map out community priorities regarding the new space, hold meetings and open houses, and allow community leaders to participate in these activities. 

Other activities include classes and free educational seminars. If the new space is designated for medical offices, physicians and leaders may present services, quality, and why the service is important for the community. If the new space is designated for hospital usage, an open house and meeting will engage the community before the facility is fully operational. As you are all discovering, communication is one of the largest components in all of this. We should be connected very closely to our communities, whether it is in urban or rural areas. We should communicate and publish newsletters targeted toward the community and keep them involved throughout. Governing boards and foundation boards are great ways to connect the community as they are involved with current and future goals and the decisions to help achieve them.

Here are three items to consider from Engaging the Community in your Project:

• Building design: The community stakeholders should be involved in the building design when there are impacts on the community, such as increased traffic, noise, or oversized architectural form.
• Community Needs: Gathering information and understanding the demographics allows the project team to understand community needs. Assessing the community needs helps determine if a new facility is needed or the best design to meet community needs.
• Stewardship Committee: “community steering community during a project’s pre-project development and design and development; the inclusion of community members on your organization’s board of directors.”
