I’m working on a biology project and need a sample draft to help me study.
Pre-Activity Checklist
- Make sure you know how your computer/device saves screenshots
Follow this link to get details on how to take and save a screenshot - Read the background material to help you understand the concepts related to this activity
- Get the Activity Form and your Activity Data Code (look under the Activity Form tab)
- Record your Activity Data Code in your Activity Form
- Close any unneeded browser tabs for best performance
Important: Please note that your instructor may have specific guidelines regarding screenshots. For example, your instructor may require additional screenshots or may prefer that screenshots are submitted in a particular manner. Please ask your instructor what their expectations are to ensure that you are meeting their requirements.
Activity Procedure
In this activity you will observe, record, and interpret data related to mushroom growth and yield (number of mushrooms produced) under various environmental conditions.
Procedure I ? Mushroom Yield ? Effect of Nitrate Concentration Level
Sources of nitrate in soil include decomposing plants, animal waste, and fertilizer.
You will do trials at nitrate concentrations of 1.0 ppm, 10.0 ppm, 35.0 ppm, and 50.0 ppm
- select the Nitrate Test setup by clicking or tapping on its button
- confirm that the concentration is set to the appropriate value for the trial, adjust the slider if needed
- start the data run by clicking or tapping on the Start Data Run button
Note: allow 36 seconds for the data run to complete ? do not interrupt the data run - record the mushroom count in the Procedure I table of your Activity Form
- take a screenshot of this completed data run (it will be used to confirm your identity and Activity Data Code)
- press the reset button and run your next trial (repeat steps 1-4) or move on to the next procedure
Procedure II ? Mushroom Yield ? Effect of Heavy Metal Concentration Level
Sources of heavy metals in soil include natural processes (e.g. emissions from volcanoes) and human activities (e.g. coal-burning power plants and other industrial processes).
You will do trials at heavy metal concentrations of 0.00 ppm, 0.50 ppm, 1.00 ppm, and 1.50 ppm
- select the Metal Test setup by clicking or tapping on its button
- confirm that the concentration is set to the appropriate value for the trial, adjust the slider if needed
- start the data run by clicking or tapping on the Start Data Run button
Note: allow 36 seconds for the data run to complete ? do not interrupt the data run - record the mushroom count in the Procedure II table of your Activity Form
- press the reset button and run your next trial (repeat steps 1-4) or move on to the next procedure
Procedure III ? Mushroom Yield ? pH Dependence
Acid rain, naturally occurring minerals, and the amount of rainfall and soil drainage impact soil pH.
You will do trials at pH values of 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0
- select the pH Test setup by clicking or tapping on its button
- confirm that the pH is set to the appropriate value for the trial, adjust the slider if needed
- start the data run by clicking or tapping on the Start Data Run button
Note: allow 36 seconds for the data run to complete ? do not interrupt the data run - record the mushroom count in the Procedure III table of your Activity Form
- press the reset button and run your next trial (repeat steps 1-4) or move on to the next procedure
Post-Activity
Complete any remaining questions. To help with the questions, review the background material and your data.
