Question Description
The documentary The Seven Five analyzes the corruption case and delves into police subculture involving officers from the NYPD 75th precinct during the 1980s.
The term police subculture (sometimes called police culture) has been used to describe the shared values and norms and the established patterns of behavior that are found among police officers. Some values that characterize police subculture, like patriotism and a dedication to creating a better society, are positive values that many Americans share. Others, like suspicion and cynicism, are not always prized by others but may be necessary for effective (and safe) police work.
Sources of Police Subculture typically come from Administration, Internal review, Interaction with other CJ Agencies, Prosecutors, Shift Work, and the Media. Factors impacting Selective Enforcement include Organizational factors, Neighborhood factors, Situational factors, and Individual officer characteristics.
Choose an officer from the documentary and discuss your thoughts on his behavior as it pertains to police subculture. Use a source or factor of police subculture (as described above) to help discuss your thoughts on what you observed about the officer’s behavior as it relates to police subculture.
Your post should be between 250 and 300 words. I recommend you do some research to familiarize yourself with the officers involved in this documentary (don’t try to rely on your memory from the documentary). You can choose one of the officers involved in criminal behavior, but don’t have to. There were other officers in this documentary that were on the right side of the law who were influenced by the police subculture.
